This December, to mark 280 years since the high-water mark of the Jacobite army’s advance on London in 1745, a number of special events are being held in Derbyshire.
Ashbourne Historical Society has invited the Alan Brecks Regiment from Scotland to recreate the proclamation of King James on the town’s market place, along with opportunities to meet Jacobite re-enactors at the local library and heritage centre. This will take place on Saturday 6th December, and is one of several events the society is planning to mark the town’s involvement in The ’45.

Then, on Sunday 7th December, Bonnie Prince Charlie himself will be visiting the only public statue of himself on Full Street, Derby. Following a short commemoration and wreath-laying, the Prince will lead his officers to Derby Museum. There, surrounded by the original pannelling of the drawing room at Exeter House were the meeting was held in 1745, a recreation will be held of the Prince’s Council of War. Will he prevail this time, and continue on the road to London? Or will the more cautious voices win out, and order the retreat?
